North West Tractor Pulling- Great Eccleston

I heard about Tractor Pulling while listening to the radio and having investigated more I saw that there was a big event coming up in local Wrye village, Great Eccleston. I got in touch with the North West division who were hosting the event and they invited me down as a VIP guest.

Now in all honesty like most people I had no idea what Tractor Pulling was! I had images of farmyard tractors pulling hay bales around. I couldn’t have been more wrong!

Firstly as I approached the event site I was overwhelmed by the amount of fans parking up. I also underestimated the fact that the event was in a field and it had been raining so looked completely out of place in my maxi-dress, sash and crown (however I did team this look with wellies as you can see!).

Once settled in the VIP area, I met the lovely Wrye Mayor Russell Forsyth and organisers of the event who were all lovely. I also spoke to lots of fans of the motor sport and learnt a lot more! The competition began and I was overwhelmed by the excitement in the arena! It was incredibly loud, possibly due to the fact that these ‘tractors’ (more modified monster machines) were equipped with jet engines!

The object of Tractor Pulling is to pull a weighted sledge down a 100metre track. The sledge gets heavier as it travels and competitors fight to take it the furthest! It got really tense as we watched for the exact distance to flag up on the board and there was some occasional excitement when an engine set on fire!

I was asked to go out into the arena to present some trophies with Russell, which was lovely and very exciting! It was however fairly difficult to reach the 1st place winner on the top podium in my wellies!

I had a lovely evening at the Tractor Pulling Event and I am genuinely quite hooked on the sport, even if I don’t yet fully understand the categories! I will be attending as a spectator next year and spreading the word to the Fylde Coast! :0)
